The expected outcome of the Seed Fest is conser­vation, enhancement and sustainable utilization of the traditional seed diversity of Wayanad and adjoining regions of the Nilgiri Bio­sphere Reserve of Western Ghats.

About Wayanad Seed Fest

Wayanad Community Seed fest is launched in 2015, is a special programme that envisages the continuity of on-farm agrobiodiversity conservation through building networks and partnerships. Wayanad Community Seed Fest 2024 aims to continue the awareness programmes on the importance of healthy seeds and the role of youth in sustainable agriculture. The Genome Saviours of Wayanad will be felicitated during the fest. The contributions of Prof. M. S. Swaminathan will be recalled. The event will also mark and proclaim the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD). Seed exchange that ensures seed continuity and on-farm conservation will be the signature event. Wayanad Community Seed Fest also forms the platform to exhibit the luxurious agrobiodiversity of Wayanad and will also be an educative programme for farmers, academicians, researchers, students, the general public and other stakeholders.


Objectives of Wayanad Community Seed Fest

  • Create a platform for farmers to exhibit and exchange traditional seed materials.
  • Creating a platform for farmers, Scientists and legislators to exchange their ideas and knowledge on the need and necessity of agro biodiversity conservation and its sustainable utilization
  • Maximizing on-farm conservation of agro biodiversity
  • Recognize the custodian farmers of agro biodiversity
  • Empower the local self Governments to integrate agro-biodiversity conservation in local development plans.
  • Engage in policy dialogues with government representatives and farmers in different levels on agro-biodiversity conservation and farmers’ rights over their seed/ genetic materials
  • Develop decentralized systems and structures involving farmers and local self government to ensure agro-biodiversity conservation
